How to Identify a Bearing Type (and Measure Ball vs. Tapered Roller Bearings)
Ever pulled a bearing, wiped the grime off, and thought: “Okay… what are you?” Let’s get you from mystery part to correct replacement—fast.
Safety first: lockout/tagout, guard against dropped parts, and wear gloves + eye protection. Bearings can have sharp edges and surprise pinch points.
Step 1: Identify the bearing type (fast clues)
- Ball bearing: smooth inner/outer rings with balls in a cage. Usually one-piece unit.
- Tapered roller bearing: looks “cone-shaped” inside—rollers are tapered and the bearing often comes as two pieces:
- Cone (inner ring + rollers + cage)
- Cup (outer ring)
Quick visual checks
- Two-piece assembly? Very likely tapered roller.
- Seals/shields on the sides? Common on ball bearings (e.g., rubber seals or metal shields).
- Markings: Look for a part number on the ring face or OD. Even partial numbers help.
Use a lint-free rag and a little solvent to expose markings. Avoid blasting with compressed air—it can spin a bearing like a tiny grenade.

- Bore / ID (shaft size)

- ID (bore): Measure the inner ring opening. Take 2–3 readings and average.
- OD: Measure across the outer ring.
- Width: Measure the bearing thickness from side to side.
Measure on the metal rings—not on seals. Rubber can fool your calipers by a few thousandths.

How to measure tapered roller bearings
Tapered rollers often require measuring both parts (cone and cup), plus the “assembly width.”
Tapered roller measurement steps
- Cone ID (bore): Measure the inner ring bore (the shaft fit).
- Cup OD: Measure the outer ring OD (the housing fit).
- Overall width: If assembled, measure total width.
If separated, measure:
