Step 1: Identify the bearing type (fast clues)

  • Ball bearing: smooth inner/outer rings with balls in a cage. Usually one-piece unit.
  • Tapered roller bearing: looks “cone-shaped” inside—rollers are tapered and the bearing often comes as two pieces:
    • Cone (inner ring + rollers + cage)
    • Cup (outer ring)

Quick visual checks

  • Two-piece assembly? Very likely tapered roller.
  • Seals/shields on the sides? Common on ball bearings (e.g., rubber seals or metal shields).
  • Markings: Look for a part number on the ring face or OD. Even partial numbers help.

Use a lint-free rag and a little solvent to expose markings. Avoid blasting with compressed air—it can spin a bearing like a tiny grenade.
